We help teams
find their flow
Select International Southern Africa is a team diagnostics consultancy. We use science-backed measurement to help organisations understand what is actually happening inside their teams — and what to do about it.
The Faraday Cage.
The Zone. The Flow.
At 35,000 feet, a bolt of lightning explodes across the skin of an aircraft.
For a split second, the sky turns white.
Passengers gasp in fear. Grip their armrests. Some silently pray.
In the cockpit, the pilots are having the time of their lives.
The lightning dances across the clouds, lighting them up from within. What looks like danger to the passengers looks like wonder to the pilots — because they know something the passengers don’t. The aircraft is a Faraday cage. A shell designed to let the energy flow around it, not through it. The storm is real. The energy is immense. And yet everyone lands safely.
The role of a leader is much the same as the engineers who designed that aircraft.
They don’t control the weather.
They create the conditions.
Conditions where people feel safe enough to challenge. Clear enough to focus. Connected enough to trust.
A missed deadline. A client complaint. A decision nobody wants to own. In most rooms, that’s where things go quiet. Or sideways. In the right conditions, it’s where people lean in instead of away. Someone says the thing nobody else would. Someone else builds on it instead of defending against it.
The disagreement doesn’t disappear —
it just stops being dangerous.
That’s the cage at work. Not the absence of the storm. The structure that lets people move through it together.
When those conditions exist, something shifts.
People align. They find their flow.
Overthinking drops away. There’s just seeing, responding, building — together. People lose track of time solving problems that matter, with people who have their back. They speak up. Step up. Back each other.
We’ve watched that shift happen — the moment individuals stop performing for themselves and start showing up for each other.
Once you’ve seen it, you stop believing it’s optional.
This is the work we’ve chosen to do: help people find work worth waking up for.
This is LEAF.
Lead to Energize. Align. Flow.
Lead to Energize. Align. Flow.
Four conditions that define high-performing teams — and the four lenses we use to evaluate and guide team development.
Create the conditions for performance
Leadership is the cage. Before a team can energise, align, or flow, a leader must build the structural conditions that make all three possible. Clarity of direction, psychological safety, and genuine accountability are not soft ideals — they are engineering decisions.
Activate what drives people
High-performing teams are energized — individually and collectively. We measure psychological safety, motivation, and the degree to which people feel their work connects to something meaningful. Energy is the foundation. Without it, alignment is cosmetic and flow is impossible.
Make sure everyone is pulling together
Misalignment is the silent killer of team performance. Teams can work hard in the wrong direction — pursuing different goals, operating on different assumptions, or lacking shared norms for how decisions are made. We surface the fault lines before they become crises.
Remove friction from how work gets done
Flow is what happens when energised, aligned people can work without unnecessary friction. We look at process clarity, role definition, cross-functional handoffs, and the structural conditions that either accelerate or inhibit team output. This is where performance lives or dies.
Practitioners, not presenters
Every person involved in our engagements has done this work themselves — not just read about it.
